Can We Talk
+ WHAT
An informed dialogue session with either the Center Director or Deputy Director. There's no agenda, no set topics,
no notes; just an opportunity for employees to tell the Center's leadership what's on their minds. Anyone can come.
Sessions are small, no more than 20 people, and on a "first come, first serve" basis. To sign up, visit
http://internal.gsfc.nasa.gov/canwetalk.cfm or call the Office of Public Affairs (PAO) at x6-8955.
+ WHY
Initiated out of HQ/Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity (OD&OE) with the basic intent to provide an additional channel
for the NASA community to voice its questions/concerns and ideas to senior leadership. As one of the efforts to respond to the
Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) Report, and to enhance the workplace culture and leverage the strength of the
Agency's workforce diversity, Goddard began holding Can We Talk: A Dialogue with the Center Director in February 2004.
The sessions follow NASA Headquarters' Can We Talk sessions that the NASA Administrator or Deputy
Administrator conduct every other month. The sessions are intended to provide constructive dialogue that will respond to
existing anxieties and heightened concerns of employees, and to achieve improved communications within NASA.
+ WHEN/WHERE
Monthly in various buildings across the Center. Generally 2nd Thursday of the month (except when it
falls on a holiday or there is a schedule conflict) at 11:30am - 1:00pm. Dates pre-announced in Dateline, on electronic
signs, and internal website.
+ ADDITIONAL INFO
The first Can We Talk session with Al Diaz occurred in February 2004 and has continued with Ed Weiler. The
meetings provide an opportunity for employees to explicity discuss any topic, concerns, or iddues as they relate to the
Goddard or NASA workforce culture, in a relaxing and open atmosphere. There are no facilitators or early submission of
questions; folks are given an opportunity to speak and voice their opinions, and questions are answered candidly. Topics
for discussion have included IFM, FFRDC, science directorate re-organization and other pertinent questions relating to the Center.
PAO (Mark Hess or rep) and/or Special Assistant for Diversity (Sharon Wong) attend. They note trends in concerns/issues
raised to determine if systemic concerns and issues need to be addressed.
